Associate Research Scientist - Dr. Bernd Fritzsch's Lab

This position will conduct NIH funded research to further molecular understanding of neurosensory development of the ear and incorporate these insights into proper design of tissue culture experiments aimed toward regenerating hair cells. To molecularly dissect derailed development of mutant mouse ears to develop a cellular therapy for hair cell replacement. Such analysis requires use of modern bioinformatics approaches combined with cell and tissue based investigations and viral transfection. This research is conducted in collaboration with local, national and international colleagues and requires appropriate personality skills to deal with a multiethnic, multicultural laboratory.

This position requires the academic knowledge of a discipline plus the ability to translate, adapt and apply the knowledge that is generally associated with a Doctoral degree in molecular neurobiology or an equivalent professional degree, i.e., M.D., D.D.D., or D.V.M. Several years of progressively responsible independent research work is required. This work will be evidenced by publications.

Previous experience in molecular work (Q-PCR, microarray). Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Demonstrated experience and commitment to diversity in a liberal arts academic environment is required.

Prior experience successfully securing external grant funding is desirable.

Postdoctoral Scholar - Dr. Douglas Houston's Lab

Postdoctoral scholar needed for a NIH-funded research project on the functions of localized determinants in early Xenopus development. Projects in Dr. Houston’s lab involve identifying and characterizing novel genes controlling dorsal axis formation, germ cell development and organogenesis. We are also in the early stages of developing genetic methods for studying Xenopus tropicalis, a new tetrapod genetic model system and projects are available in that area as well.

Candidates must have a recent PhD with emphasis in biochemistry, biology, genetics, developmental biology, molecular biology, or a related field

Ability to independently design, execute and interpret experiments in developmental biology, and to work in collaboration with other members of the laboratory.

Candidate must have extensive experience with common methods in molecular biology including construction and manipulation of plasmids, DNA and RNA isolation and analysis, RT-PCR, in situ hybridization and protein analysis including immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry.

Candidate must have strong communication skills and be able to present experimental results both in written form and in verbal presentations.

A background in developmental biology or cell/molecular biology is desired, as well as a strong publication record and references from their PhD research.
