There is a research for credit position available in the lab of Dr. Robert Malone. The position will begin in summer of 2008. Student must commit to at least one year. The work will be generally on the mechanism of chromosome behavior during meiosis and gamete formation. The direct relationship of this to human health is, of course, that the biggest cause of human birth defects is chromosome missegregation during meiosis I. And this, of course, directly relates to genetic recombination. Our two projects focus either on how recombination initiates, or how the cell coordinates unique meiotic events so they happen at the correct time and in the correct order. Our approaches include genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and cytology. The student will first start out working with a grad student, and then will have their own project for their thesis, after they've learned the ropes. Please contact robert-malone@uiowa.edu. |
