Majd Moubarak, a former part-time employee in the Biology Greenhouse and a member of Erin Irish's lab in the Department of Biology, received a SPOT Performance Award for her work as a Pharmacy Technician, Trainee in the College of Pharmacy.

Majd taught herself how to make tissue culture media while working in the Irish Lab as an undergraduate student and applied that experience recently to fulfill a request by the Department of Pathology to create viral transport media to support viral testing. As noted in the email below from Majd’s supervisor, this item is on critical shortage during these challenging times and her work and expertise played a critical role in helping her team produce these viral test media units. Majd graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Plant Biology in May 2019. Thank you, Majd, for your efforts during this major crisis and congratulations on the award!

Email from Majd's supervisor, Felix Lam, College of Pharmacy, on nominating her for the SPOT Performance Award:

I'd like to nominate Majd Moubarak for a SPOT Award

Majd was instrumental in helping our team fulfill a request by the Department of Pathology to create viral transport media to support viral testing. This item is on critical shortage and is an essential component for testing any viral samples in the hospital lab. She was able to apply her experiences in a research laboratory to creating a compounding record that allowed pharmacy to prepare this product with ingredients that were available to us. Majd was flexible and adaptable throughout the process as we faced obstacles in obtaining supplies and calculating the amount of ingredients necessary as the drug concentrations available in the pharmacy were different than what was requested in the reference protocol. At the end of the day, Majd helped produce 160 viral test media units on Friday and set the team up to create an additional 800 the following Monday. We truly appreciate Majd's expertise and her willingness to support our patients in these challenging times.

Best,

Felix Lam, PharmD, MBA, BCPS
